Pollution in freshwater environments is an issue of growing concern. Cichlids are a relevant group of fish, since some of their species are edible or used as ornamental fish. Feeding habits, courtship, parental care and aggressiveness are essential ecological aspects for the balance of the cichlid population. However, contaminants such as derivatives of pharmacological products, pesticides and mining waste have been found, which affect the behavior of cichlid fish. This type of analysis is important for the management and conservation of Mexican tilapia populations.
