Vaccines are undoubtedly one of the most valuable tools in the history of medicine, as they have made it possible to prevent numerous viral and bacterial infections, both for humans and for animal species. According to the WHO, vaccines currently prevent 2-3 million deaths every year in the human population. in this article we present a brief overview of the history of vaccines, as well as details of their formulation in terms of the molecules with which they are generally developed, termed as immunogens and adjuvants due to their functional nature. Immunogens are the parts of the vaccine that trigger a specific immune response against the infectious agent the vaccine is targeted against. Adjuvants, on the other hand, enhance the resulting immune response. This article presents, in a simple and accessible way, the complexity behind the working of vaccines and the immunological mechanisms they give rise to, in order to provide an adequate protection.
