Abstract

The monkeypox virus has taken a leading role in the universe of infectious diseases in the last two years. Concern about outbreaks of this virus that emerged in different parts of the world placed this disease in the public spotlight, because it was believed that there was no specific treatment or vaccine for it. The good news is that its lethality is not very high and that there are alternative treatments and prevention measures, originally created for the human smallpox virus. This article presents the most relevant aspects of the virus and the course of the disease it generates, as well as the most commonly used treatment and prevention measures.
