The characteristics that make Mars one of the most interesting planets in astrobiology are described. Information on the space exploration missions that have visited the planet is presented, as well as those that have studied it remotely. Some of the evidence that supports the presence of liquid water in the past and in the current conditions of the red planet is mentioned, with special emphasis on what this means for the investigations related to the study of analogous environments of Mars. The article concludes with mentions of the exploration missions and some research focused on the future manned missions that will be sent to Mars.
