The purpose of this article is to present and discuss some of the strategies that have been proposed for visual literacy and their relevance to design education. Visual literacy, as it has been translated into English, is a fundamental skill in the 21st century for those interested in visual communication as well as for the rest of the professions. We present some strategies for the development of visual literacy from the perspective of different authors, which should be promoted in today's education. Among the most important are technological literacy, visual literacy and interpretation of meaning. This last one, as the most important aspect to implement the individual's critical thinking. Finally, these strategies are contrasted with a photography-based strategy and its results in the design classroom.
