Abstract

Mexico ranks eighth in the world in beef production and consumption. Animal health surveillance is an important factor in maintaining an international competitive level and satisfying domestic consumption needs. Livestock movement and factors such as transportation, herd adaptation and the presence of disease transmitters can affect the immune system of animals. The advances that have been achieved in the detection and identification of pathogens will allow having a better control of those animals that are carriers of some microorganism. This article presents an overview of three pathogens that could affect the health of domestic cattle. Information is provided concerning the development of molecular diagnostic techniques that will allow a greater and better control over cattle health.
