Abstract

It is explained that vocation (or calling) has an ontological meaning for the being of the human subject, to wit, that—according to such meaning—it constitutes an intrinsic trait for this being. To this end, the contributions of three Mexican philosophers are articulated: Eduardo Nicol, Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez, and Luis Villoro, through an eclectic method that takes care of the coherence and context of origin of the ideas. In addition to clarifying a specific aspect of the vocational phenomenon, the paper illustrates how these contributions enrich each other, and how a fruitful and productive dialogue can be established between philosophers with diverse ways of understanding and practicing philosophy, thus contributing to the construction of a philosophical community and tradition in Mexico.
