This essay contrasts demography and sociology from a classical perspective. Both disciplines share a similar history: an intellectual upswing in the second half of the 20th century, followed by some uncertainty regarding their scientific role. They differ in two respects. First, the research objects (i. e., population) and methods (i. e., quantitative) of demography are more firmly defined than those of sociology, which is more diverse topically, methodologically, and theoretically. Second, demography is less widespread than sociology in global academia.
