Degradation of colorants in wastewater by oxidation
Keywords:
advanced oxidation processes, colorants, photocatalysis, wastewater, industrial effluent treatmentAbstract
Wastewater from the textile industry is characterized by a complex mixture of chemical compounds (including colorants), high amounts of suspended solids and dissolved salts, high temperature values and highly variable pH. The discharge of this water into rivers and lakes causes severe environmental problems. Their treatment is a priority task, although difficult because it requires the use of innovative technologies and advanced oxidation processes. In this sense, the article lists several methods to remove azo dyes from water, from physicochemical treatments (coagulation/precipitation, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, adsorption on activated carbon, among others) to advanced oxidation processes (PAO), among which are non-thermal plasma, Fenton reagent, photo-Fenton, and photocatalysis.
