The Dietary Guidelines for the Mexican Population offer an alternative for a healthy, sustainable, and affordable diet, as does the milpa diet, which revives traditional diets from each region. Their diversity allows people to identify with their sociocultural backgrounds while incorporating the characteristics of a balanced diet —one that is complete, sufficient, and varied— resulting in a strategy to curb nutritional deficiencies linked to chronic noncommunicable diseases and associated with the consumption of ultra-processed foods. Both the guidelines and the diet highlight the importance of corn and legumes as a dietary staple, emphasizing their nutritional and cultural value and their contribution to a healthy life by providing essential nutrients.
