Abstract

This manuscript offers an overview of the current knowledge about the geomorphological characteristics of the Mesoamerican Trench and its possible relationship with local seismicity. Advances in remote sensing technology for mapping and studying the seabed, the importance of international cooperation in generating global bathymetric databases for the study of subduction zones through geomorphological interpretation, and the geomorphological interaction between the Cocos plate and the North American plate. The need for a global commitment to the sustainable use of the oceans and the development of scientific research exploring the relationship between marine geomorphology and seismic activity using more detailed bathymetric databases is underlined.
